Before You Climb In: Pre-Operation Checks

Veteran operators will tell you the harvest doesn't start when you turn the key. It starts with a walkaround. Spend five minutes around the machine before you ever sit in the seat, and you'll save yourself hours of downtime in the field.

Start at the front. Check the header for bent tines, damaged reel bats, or loose cutter bar sections. A bent knife section can plug the header in the first fifty feet. Then move to the sides — inspect all belts for cracking or glazing, and check chain tension by pressing firmly with your thumb. You should see roughly half an inch of deflection. Anything looser and you're looking at slippage under load.

Fluid levels are non-negotiable. Engine oil, coolant, hydraulic oil, and fuel — check every one of them at the start of each day. Slide into the seat and take a breath. The steering wheel or joystick handles direction — straightforward enough. Next to it you'll find the hydrostatic drive lever, usually on the right console. This is not a gearshift; it's a continuously variable transmission, so there's no clutch and no gear changes to worry about. Smooth is the word here — jerky movements cause the header to bounce and lose grain.

On the same console, look for the header lift switch — a rocker or toggle that raises and lowers the front end. Nearby you'll find the reel speed dial, which controls how fast the reel pulls crop into the cutter bar. Too fast and you'll shatter grain out the front; too slow and the crop falls onto the cutter bar instead of being fed in cleanly.

Further back are the rotor or cylinder speed controls and the concave clearance adjustment. These two work together — the rotor threshes the grain from the stalk, and the concave is the grated surface underneath that lets grain fall through while keeping straw moving back. For most wheat and rice, you'll run a medium rotor speed with a moderate concave gap. Corn needs a slower rotor and wider concave. Your operator's manual has the exact settings for each crop — don't guess, look it up.

The unloading auger switch is usually a prominent lever on the left side or overhead. Flip it and the long auger swings out to the side. Engage the auger rotation and grain starts flowing. This sounds simple, but unloading on the move — while you're still harvesting — takes coordination. We'll cover that in a moment.

The dashboard is your early warning system. Watch engine temperature, oil pressure, hydraulic pressure, and rotor speed. Most modern combines have digital displays that show loss monitors and yield data too. If a warning light comes on, don't ignore it. A five-minute stop is cheaper than a blown engine.

Step by Step: Running Your First Pass

You've done the walkaround, you know the controls. Now it's time to actually harvest. Here's how your first pass should go, in order.

1. Start and Warm Up

Turn the key or press the start button. Let the engine idle for three to five minutes, especially on cool mornings. Watch the oil pressure gauge — it should come up to normal within a few seconds. While it warms up, engage the separator or rotor at low throttle and let it spin. This gets oil circulating through the rotor gearbox before you put it under load.

2. Approach the Crop

Drive toward the standing crop at an angle, not head-on. You want to enter the field cleanly, with the header parallel to the crop rows. About ten feet before you reach the grain, lower the header to cutting height — usually six to twelve inches for wheat, slightly higher for rice. The exact height depends on how much straw you want to leave standing.

3. Engage and Feed In

As the cutter bar touches the crop, engage the header drive. You'll hear the reel start pulling stalks in. Begin moving forward slowly — about two to three miles per hour to start. The key is a steady, consistent ground speed. Don't surge. Don't stop in the middle of the crop unless something is wrong. A steady feed into the rotor means even threshing and minimal grain loss.

4. Monitor and Adjust

Once you're in the pass, glance at the loss monitor if your machine has one. It tells you how much grain is going out the back with the straw. A little loss is normal — one to two percent is considered good. If the number spikes, you're probably driving too fast or the rotor is overloaded. Slow down. You can also stop and check behind the machine — get out, look at the straw coming out the back, and run your fingers through it. If you're finding whole grain heads, your concave is too wide or rotor speed is too low.

Grab a sample from the grain tank too. Cup a handful and look at it. Clean grain should be mostly free of chaff and broken pieces. If you're seeing a lot of cracked grain, your rotor speed is too high or the concave is too tight. Back it off a notch and check again.

5. Unload on the Go

When the grain tank fills — most combines hold anywhere from 200 to 400 bushels — you'll need to unload. Ideally, you have a truck or grain cart driving alongside you. Swing the auger out, position it over the truck bed, and engage the auger. Keep harvesting while grain flows. This is called "unloading on the go" and it's how professionals keep moving without stopping every half hour. If you don't have a truck alongside, pull to the edge of the field, unload, and get back to it.

Watch the auger as grain flows. You want a steady stream, not a gusher that overflows the truck. When the tank is empty, disengage the auger and swing it back in. Don't forget to swing it in — driving down the road with an extended auger is a great way to take out a fence or a power line.

6. Finish and Turn

At the end of the pass, raise the header as you come out of the crop. Don't cut into the dirt — that's how you break knife sections and pick up rocks. Make your turn at the end, line up the next pass with about six inches of overlap on the previous cut, and drop the header back in. Repeat until the field is done.

Safety Rules Every Operator Memorizes

A combine harvester is the most dangerous machine on most farms. It has more pinch points, rotating shafts, and cutting surfaces than anything else you'll operate. These rules aren't suggestions — they're what keep operators alive through a long career.

  • Never work on a running machine. If you need to clear a plugged header or check a belt, shut off the engine and remove the key. Every year, people get killed because they reached into a machine that was still turning.
  • Keep your hands, feet, and clothing away from all moving parts. Loose sleeves, drawstrings, and long hair can get caught in a shaft in a fraction of a second.
  • Watch for overhead power lines, especially when unloading. The auger extended is taller than you think. Hitting a power line with a combine harvester is fatal more often than not.
  • Use the handrails. Three points of contact — two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand — every time you climb in or out. Slipping off a combine step in muddy boots is a common way to break bones.
  • No riders. The cab is built for one person. A passenger doesn't have a seatbelt or a safe place to be, and they distract the operator.
  • Carry a fire extinguisher in the cab and know how to use it. Combine fires start fast — a hot bearing near dry chaff can ignite in seconds. A five-pound extinguisher can save a $300,000 machine.
  • Be aware of blind spots. A combine has huge areas you can't see from the seat. Before backing up, look behind you. If you're not sure, get out and check.

Mistakes New Operators Make (And How to Fix Them)

Everybody makes mistakes in their first season. The trick is catching them early before they cost you money. Here are the ones I see most often.

Driving too fast is number one. I get it — you want to cover ground, finish the field, keep up with the trucks. But a combine harvester is not a race car. Push the ground speed too high and the rotor can't process the volume of crop coming in. You'll start throwing whole grain out the back, and you might slug the rotor completely — which means shutting down, climbing out, and digging wet grain out of the machine by hand. Start slow. You can always speed up once you know what the machine can handle in your specific crop conditions.

Running the header too low is another classic. If the cutter bar is digging into the dirt, you're picking up rocks and soil that damage the cylinder and concave. You'll also plug the header with mud. The header should float just above the ground — use the header float adjustment if your machine has one. For most crops, you want to cut about six inches above the soil surface.

Ignoring the reel speed will cost you grain. If the reel is turning too fast relative to your ground speed, it beats the crop and shatters grain onto the ground before it even reaches the cutter bar. If it's too slow, the crop falls backward onto the platform instead of being fed in cleanly. The rule of thumb: reel speed should be about ten to twenty percent faster than your ground speed. Fine-tune from there based on what you see happening at the header.

And then there's the operator who ignores warning lights because "it's probably just a sensor." Sometimes it is. More often, it's a real problem that will get worse the longer you run. When a light comes on, pull over, check the manual, and investigate. Five minutes now beats five days in the shop later.

Quick Maintenance Habits That Save Thousands

You don't need to be a mechanic to keep a combine harvester running through harvest. You just need to build a few daily habits. The operators who do these things every day are the ones whose machines start every morning and don't break down in the field.

Grease everything that has a zerq fitting — every day. The header pivot points, the auger bearings, the rotor bearings. It takes ten minutes with a grease gun and it's the single best thing you can do for your machine. A bearing that runs dry will seize in the middle of a pass, and replacing it in the field is miserable.

Clean the radiator screen at least once per shift, more often in dusty conditions. Blow out the air filter every couple of days. Check the fuel filter for water — drain the bottom if you see any. These are all five-minute jobs that prevent thousand-dollar repairs.

At the end of each day, do a quick walkaround. Look for fresh oil leaks, loose belts, or anything that looks out of place. Catch a small leak at day's end and you fix it in the morning with time to spare. Catch it when the combine harvester dies in the field and you lose half a day of good harvesting weather.
