Why Your Track Combine Won't Go Straight (And How To Fix It) – 7 Step Troubleshooting Guide

If you've ever run a track combine through rice mud, you know the feeling. You're halfway down a pass, look up, and the header is wandering 2 feet off the row – and you didn't even touch the steering lever. The machine is pulling hard to one side, fighting you every inch of the way.

I've been working on crawler harvesters for over 15 years – everything from John Deere and Kubota to the Chinese machines like World, Lovol, and Zoomlion that are showing up on more and more farms. Tracking problems are the #1 complaint I hear from rice farmers, and honestly, most of them are pretty simple to fix once you know what to look for.

In this guide, I'll walk you through the exact same troubleshooting steps I use in the shop. We'll go from the cheap, easy checks first to the stuff that requires tearing into the transmission. By the end, you'll know exactly why your combine is veering and what to do about it.

Start With Track Tension – This Causes 80% of Tracking Problems

Before you touch a single bolt on the steering system, get down and look at your tracks. I can't tell you how many times a farmer has hauled his machine 50 miles to my shop, convinced the transmission is blown, and it just turned out one track was tighter than the other.

Here's what happens: when track tension is uneven, the tighter side has more rolling resistance. It drags. The looser side spins freely. The result? The combine naturally turns toward the tight side, and you're constantly fighting the lever to hold a straight line.

How to check it: Park on flat, hard ground – not in the mud. Reach under the machine between the two mid-rollers and push up on the track. Or lay a straight board across the top of the track pins. You're looking for sag, and the spec is usually 15–30mm (about 5/8" to 1-1/8") depending on your machine. Both sides should be within a couple millimeters of each other.

How to adjust it: Find the tension adjuster at the idler end of each track. Loosen the lock nut, turn the adjustment bolt to push the idler out (tightens) or let it in (loosens). Get both sides to that same 15–30mm sag, then lock it down. Don't run them too tight either – that stretches tracks, eats bogie wheels, and wastes horsepower.

While you're down there, look at the track condition. Worn tread bars, broken core iron, or cracked rubber all kill traction – especially in rice mud where you need every bit of grip you can get. If one side is significantly more worn than the other, that alone will cause drift. Replace tracks in pairs if you can; running a new track on one side and a worn-out one on the other is a guaranteed pull.

Inspect the Undercarriage – Bogies, Idlers, and Rollers

Track tension is just the start. The whole undercarriage affects how straight your combine runs.

Bogie wheels (mid-rollers): These take a beating. Bearings go out, wheels seize up, and when they stop spinning, they don't roll – they drag. A seized bogie on one side is like driving with the brake on. You'll feel it, and you'll usually hear a squeal or see heat discoloration on the wheel. Grab each wheel and try to wiggle it. If there's slop or it doesn't spin freely, replace the bearing or the whole wheel.

Idler wheels: The front idler guides the track. If the idler bushing is worn, the track can walk side to side, and you'll see it rubbing on the guide forks. That scrubbing steals power from one side and pulls the machine off line. You might even notice the track trying to climb off the idler – that's bad news. Fix it before you throw a track in the middle of a 40-acre rice paddy.

Top carrier rollers: These don't usually cause drift by themselves, but if they're seized they add drag. Same deal – spin them, check for play, replace as needed.

Also check the track guides and guide forks. Bent or worn guides let the track shift sideways, which changes the effective rolling diameter on that side. A little bend from hitting a rock or a levee can make a big difference in how straight it runs.

Steering System Problems – When the Machine Won't Track Straight Even With Good Tracks

Track combines steer by slowing or stopping one track while the other keeps pulling. If the steering mechanism doesn't fully release when you let go of the lever, you're driving with one side partially braked. That's drift.

There are two main types of steering on these machines, and they fail differently.

Mechanical Steering Clutches – The #2 Cause of Veering

Older and smaller combines use mechanical steering clutches with brake bands. When you pull the steering lever, it disengages the clutch on that side and applies the brake. Over time, things wear out.

Worn steering clutch discs. This is the big one. The friction discs wear thin, glaze over, or get soaked with oil from a leaking seal. Even when the lever is fully released, the clutch doesn't fully engage – it slips. That side makes less power, so the combine pulls to the other side. You'll often hear a rattling or grinding noise when you turn, and sometimes even in straight position.

The fix? Pull the final drive cover and replace the clutch discs. While you're in there, check the brake drum for oil. If it's wet, you've got a leaking axle seal – replace that too, or your new discs will be soaked in a week. And scuff the brake drum surface with some sandpaper so the new discs have something to bite into.

Worn shift forks and linkage. The fork that slides the steering collar wears a groove over thousands of engagements. When it's worn, the clutch doesn't fully seat even when the lever is all the way forward. You might have full lever travel but the clutch is only halfway engaged. Adjust the linkage per your manual – there's usually a specific free-play measurement – and replace the fork if it's grooved up.

Chipped or worn steering gears. If you feel a vibration or clunking when you steer, and the machine wanders unpredictably, you might have broken teeth on the steering gear or center gear. This is not a "keep running it" problem. If a tooth lets go completely, you'll lock up the transmission and possibly crack the case. Split it and replace the gears.

Brake band not releasing. If the brake band is adjusted too tight, or the return spring is broken, the brake drags even when you're not turning. That side runs hot and slow. Adjust the brake clearance and replace any springs that are collapsed or broken.

Hydraulic Steering and HST Transmission Issues

Newer combines use hydraulic steering – either a hydraulic steering valve controlling clutch/brake packs, or a full HST (Hydrostatic Transmission) with separate left/right drive motors. These are nice when they work, but hydraulic problems can be sneaky.

Low or dirty hydraulic oil. This is the first thing to check. If the oil level is low, or the oil is burnt and black, or the filter is plugged, flow to the drive motors isn't equal on both sides. One track turns a little slower than the other. Check the sight glass, smell the oil – if it smells burnt, change it. Use the right viscosity for your climate (too thick in cold weather and it won't flow right; too thin in heat and it bypasses internally). And for God's sake, change the filter when you change the oil.

Air in the hydraulic system. If you've just done hydraulic work, or if the oil level got low enough to suck air, you'll get spongy steering and drift. Air compresses, oil doesn't – so the response is uneven. Bleed the system per your manual. Usually that means cracking the line fittings at the steering cylinders or motors and working the steering back and forth until you get solid oil with no bubbles.

Steering valve spool not centering. Inside the steering valve, a spool slides back and forth to direct oil. If the centering springs are weak or broken, or if the spool is scored and sticking, oil keeps flowing to one side even when the steering wheel or lever is centered. The machine slowly veers off on its own. This is a rebuild-or-replace situation – you can hone the spool bore if it's just varnish, but scored aluminum means a new valve.

Leaking steering cylinders or drive motors. External leaks are obvious – you'll see oil. But internal leaks? A worn seal on the cylinder piston lets oil bypass, so that side doesn't get full pressure. Same with HST drive motors – worn internals mean less torque on one side. A pressure test at each motor will tell you if they're balanced. If one side is 10-15% low, that's your drift. Rebuild or replace the weak motor.

HST linkage out of adjustment. On dual-HST machines, the two pumps are controlled by linkages from the steering lever. If one side's linkage is off, the swashplates don't stroke equally, even when the lever is centered. You can adjust the rod ends to get both pumps to neutral at the same time. This is finicky – small adjustments make a big difference. Turn the buckle a quarter turn at a time and test drive.

Final Drive and Powertrain – The Stuff Nobody Wants to Fix

If your tracks are good, your steering checks out, and you're still pulling, start looking at the final drives.

Worn drive sprockets. The sprocket teeth that engage the track wear down. When they get pointy or hooked, they don't mesh right – they slip and jump, especially under load. That side loses forward motion. You'll hear a rhythmic clicking or popping as the teeth skip. Sprockets are cheap compared to tracks; replace them when the teeth get thin. And make sure the mounting bolts are torqued – I've seen loose sprocket bolts cause all kinds of weird wander.

Bent axle or bad axle bearing. If you've hit something hard – a stump, a rock, a concrete ditch crossing – you can bend an axle housing or knock out a bearing. The sprocket or idler sits at a slight angle, so the track doesn't run true. Jack up that side, grab the track frame, and try to rock it. Any clunking or excessive movement means bearings or bushings. A bent axle usually needs replacing, not straightening.

Chain drive final drives. Some machines use chain drive to the sprockets. If one chain is worn and stretched more than the other, or if a tensioner is weak, you get speed variation side to side. Check chain slack, look for stiff links, and replace chains in pairs if they're shot.

"False Drift" – When It's Not Actually Broken

Before you start tearing things apart, make sure you're not chasing a ghost.

Fields aren't flat. If you're running across a side hill, or one track is in a deep rut or softer mud, gravity and rolling resistance will pull the machine downhill or toward the softer side. That's physics, not a mechanical problem. You'll have to hold a little steering correction – that's normal.

Also check your steering lever free play. If the lever flops around and doesn't return solidly to center, the detent or return spring might be worn. It feels like drift, but it's just the lever not seating. A simple linkage adjustment fixes it.

And if you just put new tracks on or adjusted the tension, take it for a spin on hard ground before you go back to the field. New tracks need to seat in, and sometimes the tension needs a tiny tweak after an hour of running.

Preventive Maintenance – Stop Drift Before It Starts

Here's the honest truth: most tracking problems are preventable. I see the same failures every harvest, and almost all of them come down to skipped maintenance.

Before every season, spend a couple hours going over the machine. Set track tension correctly and make sure both sides match. Change the hydraulic oil and filter – don't just top it off. Grease every zerk, especially the ones on the undercarriage and steering linkage. Pull the final drive covers and check clutch disc thickness; if they're getting thin, replace them now, not in the middle of the paddy when the parts store is 3 hours away.

In the field, use some common sense. Cross levees and ditches straight on, not at an angle – that side-loads the tracks and bends stuff. Slow down for rough ground. Don't spin-turn on concrete; that chews up tracks and strains the steering clutches. If you get stuck, don't sit there rocking it back and forth at full throttle – that's how you burn up clutches and throw tracks. Get a pull or dig yourself out.

And for crying out loud, when you notice a little pull, don't ignore it. That 6-inch drift today is a thrown track or a blown transmission tomorrow. Fix it early and it's a $20 adjustment. Wait too long and it's a $2,000 repair bill and three days down during harvest.

When to Call a Professional

Let's be realistic – you can fix a lot of this stuff in the farm shop with basic tools. But if you get to step 7 and you're looking at HST pump rebuilds, steering valve work, or splitting the transmission for gear replacement, that's where a lot of guys get in over their heads. Hydraulic systems need clean conditions and precise measurements; get dirt in there and you'll be doing it again next month. Transmission gears need proper preload and backlash settings.

If you're not set up for that, or if you've gone through the checklist and still can't find it, call your dealer or a good independent combine mechanic. A couple hours of shop labor is cheaper than guessing and replacing parts you don't need.
